Proposal for a media product- Grime Time

Objective

I am proposing to produce a magazine based on the music genre grime within North London. I chose to base my magazine on this because there is nothing like this being sold in the market and in North London so we’ll be able to attract our target audience easier and give the readers an interesting and exciting insight to the grime genre.

Name/Genre of Magazine

Grime Time is a music magazine based specifically for the music genre grime in North London. The magazine is called Grime Time  because it gives the reader an understanding of what the magazine is about by only reading the title and it is easy to remember. The reason why the magazine is based on grime is because research shows that grime is one of the most popular genres of music for teenagers in North London so the magazine would appeal to more members of the public in North London.

Focus of First Issue

The focus of the first issue is to firstly attract as many readers in our target audience as possible and to make the new readers enjoy reading the magazine, by doing this we would have to make the magazine look attractive to the target audience, and include reliable and interesting information on the grime genre.

These were the 3 potential mastheads for my magazine, they all share the same colour scheme and background, this is because I believe it would appeal more to the target audience and relates to grime well, the masthead I chose if the first one because it is easy to read and I feel that the target audience will be more attracted by it than the other masthead examples.

However, the font for the articles is going to be more formal so the audience would take the articles more seriously and it would be easier to read, for example Cambria(body) which is this font being used currently,

or this font (Chapaza) which is more bold.

This font will be used for the cover lines as it firstly relates to the genre, it is bold and it would attract the reader’s attention.

Types of articles included

The different types of articles included in the magazine are interviews with artists, upcoming gigs in North London and what artists to look out for in the future.

Sources of Advertising

Potential sources of advertising included in the magazine would be other companies wanting to promote their product in my magazine as they may have the same target audience and they want to reach out and attract the same target audience as well.

Competition

Macintosh HD:Users:18cburke:Desktop:Untitled.tiffCurrently in North London there are not any local grime magazines available to the public. This is why there is a gap in the market for my magazine, however there is still competition from other local magazines that aren’t necessarily music based for example,

This is Enfield’s local magazine called Enfield presents. It is an arts and culture based magazine for the locals and it gives you everything you need to know about upcoming events in Enfield and what is going on.

This is another local magazine which is given monthly to everyone across Southgate. It advertises for loads of local businesses that the local people might be interested in, and it shows everything about what it happening in the local area and gives loads of articles about food, local bands and upcoming events.

How is my magazine different?

My magazine is different from others as other magazines don’t include enough information about what the next gigs are in the local area and who to look out for which is more modern, and is what people nowadays would like to know. Also my magazine will focus more on giving the less known artists as big attention in the magazine as the well-known artists which other magazines don’t tend to do, this would make our magazine unique and give the readers a chance to find different artists which they may not have heard of before which other magazines don’t offer.

Target Audience

The primary target audience is men or women aged 15-18; this is a particular younger target audience as it is known that younger people nowadays are taking to grime music and listen to grime music more than the older generation, so by targeting a younger generation, they would be more likely to purchase the magazine.

Our Audience Demographics

Our audience demographics can range from anywhere from upper class, middle class or a lower middle class people earning a high income or a low income. But as our magazine is targeting people in North London, and it is a big area, different people from different areas of North London would be interested in my magazine where as other people may not like the grime genre.

Assumptions about the audience
My assumptions of the audience are that they are going to enjoy reading the magazine and will continue to purchase the magazine on a regular basis as well as taking notes on when the next gig is or what artist to look out for. I believe the magazine will be able to easily catch the attention of the audience and will give a good first impression for first time buyers. I also believe that our audience will grow rapidly, especially with the younger generation nowadays would be able to spread the word quickly about the magazine if they enjoyed it via social media platforms etc.
How does the magazine appeal to the audience?
The magazine will appeal to the audience as firstly the front cover would include a well-known artist on the front cover which most of the target audience would recognize so it would attract their attention when the magazine is on the shelf or online. Also the magazine will have a unique and relatable look towards the target audience which would hopefully appeal to the target audience.
What unique qualities the editorial boards possess to bring the magazine to fruition?
We have done lots of research to find out what our target audience wants to read in a magazine, so we will use that to put into the magazine. We believe by using this research, our target audience would enjoy reading the magazine even more and would continue to purchase on a regular basis.
Job Descriptions
           Managing Editor
  • The job descriptions of magazine managing editors can vary widely depending on the type and size of publication they work on. They're broadly responsible for commissioning articles, arranging copy, managing other editors and writers and making sure the publication gets out on time.
  •   Ad Sales Agent

  • Without money generated by the latter, most publications wouldn't survive. Advertising sales agents spend their working days selling media space to businesses, mostly over the phone.
           Writer
  • Many magazines use both staff and freelance writers. Aspiring writers or reporters looking to secure a staff role on a magazine will typically need a first degree in journalism, English or communications. Freelance writers can pitch ideas to magazine editors, but will stand a better chance of having work commissioned if they have a strong portfolio of previously published features.
           Circulation Director
  • A magazine circulation director has overall responsibility for growing and keeping a publication's readership. They're charged with analysing a magazine's audience and coming up with ways to attract new readers through retail, subscription and digital channels.
           Photo Editor/Researcher
  • Magazine photo and picture editors and researchers are responsible for selecting images and artwork to accompany a publication's articles. They may commission original work, or buy images and artwork from agencies, individual artists and photographers.
           Editorial Assistant
  • Editorial assistant roles are largely administrative, but can involve some editorial tasks such as writing or proofreading. A magazine editorial assistant will typically provide support to a publication's editorial team.
               Art Director
  • Art directors are responsible for the overall visual style of a magazine.
 Problems I Foresee
One of the problems I foresee is that there are a lot of grime based magazines already being sold so it would be hard to beat the competitors straight away, and people would already be used to purchasing a magazine regularly and wouldn’t want to change, so I would have to try and convince the existing audience purchase my magazine and to continue to on a regular basis, to do this I would need to make the magazine look attractive on the in and outside of the magazine and also keep the audience interested in what they are reading in the magazine, this would hopefully keep the audience regularly purchasing my magazine instead of the competitors.

These magazines are what I would like to emulate for my magazine. The front cover is modern and relates to the target audience As well just by looking at the main picture and reading the cover lines, this gives the audience a good understanding of what this magazine is about and what to expect when they look inside. The double page spread is very simple and makes the audience know exactly what the article is about. It is taken from a local magazine, so if  I emulate the way the page is set out, it will be familiarised with some local people.

What marketing and distribution methods will be used?
The main marketing tools that we will use and that we believe will be the most affective is social media, this way we believe that we can reach out to a larger majority of our target audience which are young people aged between 16-24, who the vast majority use social media such as Facebook, snapchat. We will also have our own Facebook Page and Twitter account that will be promoted on the magazine so our audience can interact with us. Another method of marketing would be to sell leaflets at grime gigs as we know that we'll have a captive audience at these venues. We will also distribute the magazine at grime gigs, newsagents as well as selling them as a download online where the target audience is most likely to engage with the product.
